Programs > Summer Vacation > Har Ki Dun Trek

The trek to Har-ki-Dun will provide you with all the sights that you are looking for. Lush greenery, scraggy mountains, towering snow capped peaks, glaciers and gushing streams that seem to spring from nowhere. Har-ki-Dun is situated in the Western Garhwal Himalayas, at the base of Fateh Parvat. This cradle shaped valley, South-east of Jaundar glacier is surrounded by dense forests of pine, deodar and other coniferous trees. It is totally covered by a blanket of blue and purple flowers. The surrounding forest is rich in wild life and exotic birds and forms part of the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary & National Park. The main snow clad peaks visible from here are Swarga-Rohini, Bandarpunch and Kala Nag. Associated with a legend from the Mahabharata, the name Har-ki-Dun itself, literally means 'Valley of God.' The trek follows the Supin river, tributary of the River Tons and passes through the beautiful villages of this valley to reach the huge rolling meadows at Har-ki-Dun.

TENTATIVE ITINERARY FOR FIXED DEPARTURES:
DEHRADUN TO DEHRADUN

Day 01 : Dehradun to Sankri (210km) - 8 h drive
We start early from Dehradun and drive thru the day to reach the village of Sankri by evening. The final stretch is through the Govind Pashu National Park after we cross a check post at Netwar. We rest at night in a guest house or in camps.

Day 03 : Sankri to Osla (2200m)/ Seema - 15km trek (5h)
Post breakfast we are transported from Sankri to Taluka. The drive is a bit bumpy. The trek commences from Taluka on a stony path. With the river Tons gushing through rapids beside us, under the shade of walnut, pine and other trees, the walk is quite pleasant. Often the passing villagers greet us on the way.

The path crosses over a few streams which merge with Tons. After a few hours of walk the village of Gangad can be seen towards the left, across the river. We continue our hike and then cross a bridge for the final stretch. After about fifteen minutes of uphill walk, our destination unfolds itself - the quaint village of Osla. We set camp here or stay in a hut with a local family.

Day 04 : Osla / Seema to Har ki Dun(3510 m) - 7 km (5h)
From Osla the trail gradually rises higher and passes through bushes of flowers like orchids, fleece flowers and sunflowers. The ascending path climbs high above the confluence of Tons river and the river from Ruinsara valley.

After traversing higher up along the left side of the river, we camp at a very panoramic spot in Har ki Dun, located at the junction of two valleys one originating from Jaundhar glacier and the other from beyond Hata glacier.

Day 05 : Explore Har ki Dun
Usually we spend a layover day here at Har ki Dun. The vast open meadows following the course of the Tons river can be explored. Further ahead of the meadows one can walk among the forests of Bhojpatra trees (Himalayan birch) or get a closer glimpse of the Jaundhar glacier and Swargarohini peak.

Day 06 : Back to Osla / Seema - 3-4hr
The journey back to Osla / Seema is an easy walk. After reaching, one can roam about in the village, talk to locals and soak in the Garhwali culture.

Day 07 : Osla / Seema to Taluka-Sankri - 15km trek (5-6h)
Early in the morning, we bid farewell to the villagers of Osla and hike till Taluka. A vehicle from Taluka takes us back to Sankri, where we retire for the day in camps or guest house.
